Rare Protocol Weekly Update: Dec 12
Miami musings, onchain reputations, featured pools, and more.
The future of reputation is onchain.
This concept isn’t new to web3. In fact, it’s been a core tenant of the space since the early days, underlying discussions around tying digital identities to wallets and packing meaningful actions into onchain transactions. As this space has proliferated, however, the question of ‘what makes up someone’s reputation?’ has expanded drastically in scope.
Prior to the emergence of web3, one’s official reputation may have consisted of a handful of things - credit score, employment history, marital status, citizenship, etc. However, due to web3’s ability to publicly record data through added layers of onchain transparency, previously informal elements of one’s reputation – community connections, social standing, marketplaces of choices – can now be clarified and recorded in more legitimate ways.
Adding this nuance to reputation building is the challenge we’re excited to tackle at Rare Protocol; as members of the chronically online, how can we build informed relationships with artists and collectors on par with relationships formed in IRL? And how can we do so in a manner that is trustworthy, open, and scalable? Solving this problem is our mission, and we invite you to join us on the journey.

Miami Musings
The TL was full of Miami Art Basel posts this week, with artists, art lovers, and JPEG maxis heading in droves to the city for a week of events, art openings, immersive exhibits, talks, gigs, parties, and traffic. What started as a traditional art fair has evolved into one of the most significant weeks of the year for those interested in the intersection of art, technology, and culture. Offline and onchain worlds collided over Art Basel, signaling how web3 is becoming increasingly embedded in the world around us - from art shows, to reputation signals, to proof of attendance, to attestations of ownership, and more.
Any recurring themes from Miami Art Basel? Yes.
As a glimmer of light perhaps signaling the end of a long, dark bear market, conversations at Art Basel hovered around the importance of tight-knit communities, the value of onchain reputation building, the emerging confluence of cryptoart and traditional art worlds, and the growing attention on consumer crypto projects. All this to say that, because projects and communities have had their heads down building over the course of the bear market, we are now entering an era on the other side with greater utility than ever before.
